Workplace Communication - It Is Not What You Say, But How You Say It!

Have you ever heard the quote: "It is not what you say, but how you say it?" This quote is a direct reflection of what role you take when communicating especially in the business world.

Part of my business coaching training services includes helping executives enhance their self leadership skills including workplace communication. One of the tools that I employ is a very old one - Transactional Analysis or TA for short. This great tool determines the dominant role from which the person speaks that being Adult, Parent or Child.

Have you ever heard someone in business say: "I do not wanna do that" or "That is not my job!" These individuals are speaking from the role of a child. For the most part in the workplace, this is not a positive role. There are exceptions. Aren't there always?

A current executive coaching client asked me "that being a child is never a good role, is it?" My response is that sometimes as a leader we need the enthusiasm of a child, the boundless energy, the ongoing inquisitiveness and that we must demonstrates those qualities.

The parent role is one where the person is always in control, always directing or what I call having a back loaded with the performance monkeys of everyone else. Executives, managers and supervisors are far more often in parent mode than adult mode. This behavior is really quite evident when it comes to achieving organizational or departmental goals because it sounds like dictating. Business Coaching Training Tip: Learn to say "Not my monkey!"

Finally, the adult role is where the receiver of the communication is given options. The prevailing behaviors by the adult communicator are thinking independently, rationally and objectively. In the adult role, the individual can examine the responses from the child or the parent and determine to accept it or reject it. The adult is simply speaking the problem solver. Business Coaching Training Tip: Develop your self leadership skills.

What is so cool about this old tool is that many people are unaware of it and so it is something new. The simplicity of the tool allows anyone to better understand their roles (egos) and how to leverage them to improve workplace communications. TA is a great proactive tool to help individuals improve their own communications skills within their departments and their organizations.
